Anarchy of the Soul

Harvard Professor Clayton Christensen once relayed a conversation he had with a Chinese Marxist economist who provided his analysis on America. He concluded that most Americans have no idea how critical religion is to the functioning of democracy. He told Christensen, “The reason your democracy works is not because the government was designed to oversee what everyone does. Rather, democracy works because most people voluntarily obey the law.”

He added, “In the past, most Americans attended a church or synagogue where they were taught that they are answerable not just to society but to God. As religion loses its influence, where are the institutions that will teach the next generation that they too need to voluntarily choose to obey the laws? If you take away religion, you can’t hire enough police.”

Let’s reemphasize the importance of the church, and its moral principles. (From an article by Bob Russell, entitled: Racism and Retaliation, 5/31/20.)

Isn’t this why the founders of our country thought our representative/democratic form of government would work?  Because it needed a “people” who somewhat self-govern themselves, obeying reasonable laws because it is the right thing to do, not just because there is personal benefit.  That requires people with a higher authority, who are taught principles of love, respect, “doing unto others as you’d have them do unto you” so that a police state is not necessary.  Obviously not all people in any society will have such principles built into them, but there must be a foundation of many who do.  Because our nation was started by many people seeking religious freedom as they came to this new land, we had such a moral foundation to build on.

But that is changing as our society gravitates toward an amoral culture, where more and more people want nothing to do with religion, who often oppose the Christian faith because of the association a few within its ranks have with bigotry or racism, etc. Such things are not true for most who are truly Christian, but many of the critics fail to study the topic and just go forward with broad assumptions, which the media helps drive.  And as our religious foundation erodes, respect for authority, for police, for ministers, erodes with it, and we are left with the natural outcome of such a course: anarchy.  Let’s hope we aren’t as far down this road as media lets on.

The truth: our country will continue down this devastating path we are currently on unless there is a moral awakening within the country.  “What can I do” you ask?  You have control of one person, yourself, and if enough individuals act, the result can be exponential.  Is your Christian faith lax?  Do you refrain from attending weekly services that should help strengthen and reinforce your faith?  Do you talk about faith, asking questions to make it more than superficial?  Are you really developing a relationship with this person you call Lord through Bible study and prayer, or is Jesus just a figurehead of a religious faith you claim, but in all honesty don’t have?

Our country has reached its current state due to many people calling themselves Christian when the truth would define them otherwise.

Our country is at stake.  But more importantly, your salvation is at stake!  Many countries have come and gone through history, but the real anarchy we must fear is an anarchy of the soul.  Seriously, who is this man named Jesus, and what should you do with him?

Cross Point: “Therefore, brothers and sisters, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election.  For if you practice these qualities (verses 5-7), you will never fall.”  (2 Peter 1:10)
